Rather than arguing for or against any location, the series documents how each claim emerged, what evidence is cited, how it is interpreted, and where the research stands today.
Cape Verde lies roughly six hundred kilometers west of Senegal, extending well into the eastern Atlantic beyond the continental shelf of West Africa. Unlike the Canary Islands, which remain relatively close to the African margin, Cape Verde rises from significantly deeper oceanic crust. The surrounding seafloor drops steeply into abyssal depths. There is no broad shallow platform linking the islands to the mainland, no transitional slope suggesting recent separation. The archipelago presents itself as vertical construction emerging from deep water.
That geographic fact did not prevent Cape Verde from entering the Atlantis discussion. In some respects, it encouraged it.
By the nineteenth century, Atlantist writers were no longer searching for a single surviving island. They were sketching outlines. The Azores were proposed as northern remnants. The Canary Islands were treated as eastern elevations. Cape Verde, positioned farther south and more deeply into the Atlantic, appeared to complete the arc. If a large Atlantic landmass once occupied the space between Europe and the Americas, its margins would need to leave elevated fragments behind. When plotted on a map, the island chains suggested continuity to those already inclined to expect it.
At the time, this reasoning was not irrational. Detailed bathymetric data did not yet exist. Submarine banks and seamounts southwest of the archipelago appeared suggestive when rendered with sparse depth soundings. Elevated seafloor could plausibly be interpreted as former high ground. Plate tectonics had not yet been formulated. Mantle plume theory did not yet constrain volcanic origin models. Within that informational environment, a drowned landmass remained a viable hypothesis in broader geological debate.
Cape Verde’s appeal rested less on ruins or myth than on structural plausibility.
Its position also overlapped with regions crowded by phantom islands on Renaissance and early modern maps. Names such as Antillia and St. Brendan’s Isle appeared repeatedly west of Iberia and northwest Africa, drifting across charts for centuries. For writers predisposed toward lost-land interpretations, this persistence suggested degraded memory rather than simple cartographic error. If real land once existed and later subsided, its memory might survive in unstable placement. A real archipelago such as Cape Verde could serve as an anchor within that inherited uncertainty, something fixed within a sea earlier maps treated as more populated than it proved to be.
This layer of argument did not depend on archaeology. It depended on continuity of depiction.
The islands themselves reinforced catastrophic readings. Massive shield volcanoes dominate several islands, particularly Fogo. Submarine surveys reveal evidence of large-scale flank collapses where volcanic material slid into the sea. The seabed bears scars of dramatic failure. To observers predisposed toward continental loss, such features could be interpreted as fragments of broader collapse. If parts of islands could fail suddenly, perhaps entire landscapes once had.
The difficulty lies in scale. Volcanic collapse reshapes islands. It does not remove continental masses.
Modern geophysical research places Cape Verde firmly within a long-lived mantle plume system active for tens of millions of years. The islands consist of oceanic basalt formed through hotspot volcanism rather than continental crust. Geochemical signatures confirm deep mantle origins incompatible with submerged continental fragments. High-resolution multibeam sonar mapping resolves surrounding seamounts and banks as volcanic constructs. Their morphology lacks sedimentary layering, drainage systems, and erosional surfaces expected from long subaerial exposure. What earlier depth charts left ambiguous is now structurally constrained.
Sea-level reconstructions narrow the interpretive range further. During the Last Glacial Maximum, global sea levels were approximately 120 meters lower than present. That reduction dramatically altered West African coastal shelves but did not connect Cape Verde to the mainland. Even at maximum exposure, the islands remained isolated peaks separated by deep water.
Archaeologically, the case is clearer still. There is no evidence of human presence on Cape Verde prior to Portuguese arrival in the fifteenth century. Surveys have not identified earlier settlements, tools, or cultural layers. This absence is not provisional. It reflects repeated investigation and the relatively recent volcanic surfaces of the islands themselves. There is no submerged cultural horizon offshore and no inland layer suggesting lost occupation.
When compared structurally with Plato’s account, the alignment weakens further. Plato describes a large island beyond the Pillars of Heracles featuring a vast plain, concentric urban works, extensive agriculture, and imperial reach. Cape Verde does not align geographically, chronologically, or compositionally with that description. Its volcanic origin conflicts with expectations of continental crust. Its scale does not approach the dimensions given in the dialogues. Its lack of ancient habitation eliminates direct cultural continuity.
To equate Cape Verde with Atlantis requires discarding most of Plato’s structural elements and substituting geometric resemblance in their place.
Cape Verde’s significance therefore lies not in its fit, but in its method. It demonstrates how Atlantis speculation can migrate outward from textual and cultural anchors into increasingly abstract geographic reasoning. When position and bathymetric elevation become primary criteria, shape begins to substitute for evidence. That substitution was historically understandable in periods of limited seabed knowledge. Modern geology narrows that interpretive space without requiring dramatic rebuttal.
The islands remain volcanic, isolated, and geologically dynamic. They do not preserve a lost civilization. They do preserve a record of how incomplete information once allowed a broader interpretive range.
With Cape Verde, the Atlantic arc reaches its structural limit. Beyond this point, mid-ocean candidates lose plausibility under geological scrutiny. The inquiry now shifts toward regions where land, archaeology, and text intersect more tightly, and where interpretive freedom narrows accordingly.
